BIM Execution Plan (BEP)

Feedback

A BIM Execution Plan (BEP) is a framework that outlines how a Building Information Modeling (BIM) project will be executed, managed and delivered. It is a detailed plan that outlines the specific processes, protocols, and standards that will be used throughout the project, and it serves as a guide for the project team to ensure that the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the employer’s satisfaction. The BEP also outlines the responsibilities of each member of the project team, as well as the procedures that will be used for managing and controlling the project.

The BEP should be developed early in the project, ideally during the planning phase, and it should be reviewed and updated regularly throughout the project to ensure that it remains accurate and up-to-date. The BEP should be a living document that is accessible to all members of the project team and should be used as a reference throughout the project.

The BEP typically includes the following sections:

Project overview

Providing an overview of the project, including the project scope, objectives, and deliverables.

BIM objectives

Outlines the specific BIM objectives for the project, such as the level of development (LOD) required for the project, and the specific BIM deliverables, and their Level of Geometry (LOG) and Level of Information (LOI) that will be required.

BIM protocols and standards

The specific protocols and standards that will be used throughout the project are stated, including industry standards such as ISO 19650, and any specific standards set by the employer or client.

Roles and responsibilities

Specific roles and responsibilities of each member of the project team is defined, including the BIM manager, the project manager, and the design team.

Schedule

Project key milestones and deadlines are defined.

Data management procedures

The specific procedures that will be used for managing and controlling the project data, including the Common Data Environment, and how the BIM model will be stored, shared, and backed up.

Operational software and services

Lays out the second, or third-party software or services that, and depending on the EIR or contracting parties, the stakeholders have available or are forbidden to use.

When a BEP is designed solely by the appointing party it’s called a Pre-Contract BEP. It usually states the project´s development criteria as part of the employer’s EIR.

Once a contract has been awarded, the BEP included in the contract is known as a Post-Contract BEP. This BEP is the foundation for the development of the project by all parties involved and how the work should move forward.

It is strongly advised that you review, and understand, all points within a BEP before signing-off, as this document will be the basis for all tasks undertaken within a project.
