Model View Definition (MVD)

Feedback

Model View Definition (MVD) is a crucial element in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process. It is a set of standards or guidelines that describe how building information is organized, structured, and represented in a BIM model. The MVD specifies the information and data elements required and how they should be structured to maintain consistency and interoperability between different BIM software platforms.

The main objective of MVDs is to ensure that all parties involved in the construction project have a common understanding of the data contained in the BIM model, regardless of the software or platforms used to create it. By ensuring a common understanding, the MVD facilitates smooth and efficient collaboration, reducing the risk of errors and misinterpretation of information.

The MVDs are a product of the buildingSMART International organization. They are based on the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) data schema, a neutral and open standard for data exchange within the BIM process. The MVD defines the structure of the model, the data exchange requirements, and the semantic meaning of the information contained in the BIM model.

MVDs are essential because they enable the exchange of information between different BIM software platforms, which is critical to the success of the BIM process. Without MVDs, interoperability between software platforms would be challenging, resulting in errors, omissions, and possible inconsistencies.

As the construction industry moves towards greater collaboration and efficiency, the importance of MVDs will continue to grow and become an integral part of the BIM process.
